Festivals in Ghana

Festivals are a colourful and vibrant part of the Ghanaian culture. Each year festivals and durbars are held in various parts of the country, to celebrate the heritage of the people. Attending one of these festivals is a colourful and entertaining way to spend time in Ghana.

These festivals signify the planting season, abundant harvest, commemorating historical events, or outstanding leaders and ancestors, or the coming of age of adolescent girls. Each festival is climaxed by a durbar - a gathering of the chief and people if the region and celebrated with drumming and dancing amidst other festivities.

One of such biggest festivals is the Bogbetsotso festival. A festival of the, Anglo in the Volta Region which takes place in November. It commemorates the sojourn of the Anglos from their Ancestral Home of Notsie in Togo to Angla in modern-day Ghana. Another is the Homowo festival which is celebrated in August and September in thanks of an abundant harvest.
