The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is Canada’s lead agency for development assistance. It has a mandate to support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world.

CIDA’s priorities are democratic governance, private sector development, health, basic education, equality between women and men, and environmental sustainability. These are areas in which Canadian expertise can make a difference.

CIDA works with a wide range of partners in Canada and overseas, including nonon-governmental organizations (NGOs), the private sector, universities and colleges, cooperatives, international organizations, and local and national governments. The expertise and knowledge of the Agency’s partners are essential to providing effective, high-quality assistance.

CIDA priorites in Ghana are food security/ agriculture water and governance with much of its focus in the Northern Regions. Currently, CIDA has 26 bilateral programs in operations.

SIGEP is a pilot project ($CDN 500,000) designed to support strategically focused gender interventions, which will be implemented over an 18 month period between 2008 and 2010 by state and non-state actors. It is a gender specific project, which addresses and promotes strategic gender interests. These are considered to be long-term, usually not material, and often related to structural changes in society. The aim is to increase women’s control and influence in their personal lives and in society at large. Areas of focus include changes to gender relations, roles, tasks, responsibilities and changes at the level of organizations and institutions more
